Set in a dangerous post-apocalyptic, near-future Manhattan, THE BLACK SKY tells the gripping story of a group of survivors, some living in a lawless wasteland, others safely inside a walled city, caught in the ticking clock adventure of an extraordinary mission to save one man, unlock the truth of humanity’s near extinction, and risk it all to save the ones they love - a thrilling debut novel that illuminates the power of family, survival against all odds, and hope in dark times.
Pushing on the door, it creaks open a few inches before stopping thanks to a thin chain link, which he cuts through with a pair of wire cutters the merc hands him out of the duffle bag. He touches the door again, gives it a nudge and it swings in, revealing a dingy gas cloud-filled room. Ward maneuvers into the narrow hallway first, taking small deliberate steps, followed by the pair of mercs. The third, as instructed, stands just outside the door with eyes focused on Gertrude’s door across the hall, while periodically glancing down the corridor as more gas spills out and dissipates at his feet.
Ward continues forward to the small closet and bathroom ahead, flipping on light switches as he goes, but no lights turn on. He grabs a stout metal flashlight from his pocket and holds it just above his pistol, which is raised to eye level. The mercs follow cautiously behind; as he opens the closet door, a merc closes the main door behind them.
They do not notice above them, perched silently on the chandelier, awaits one of their targets – Tessa.
Outfitted in her own gas mask, her feet lean carefully forward on the round base of the circular metal fixture, shaped like an upside cone. What was once ornate, with hundreds of dusty crystals dangling via small hooks to create a luminescent entryway, had been long ago stripped to its simple tubular frame along with all the lightbulbs. Obscured by the fog of the tear gas, she watches as Ward and the first merc walk right under her as she crouches in the small space between the top of the chandelier and the ceiling. She waits for them to move just far enough past her to give her space to land when it is time to spring the trap.
Ward continues to fumble for a light switch in the bathroom, not knowing the light activates via a chain pull to the right of the vanity mirror along the left wall, a quirk of the hundred-year-old building design.
Tessa makes her move.
