Set months after Slammed ended, Point of Retreat takes up after Layken’s mom has passed and Layken and Will are in a comfortable routine taking care of their younger siblings. Sometimes they do this separately, but mostly, they are there for each other. Helping the other out.
After a beautiful conclusion to Slammed, and a sincere declaration from both Will and Layken, their relationship appears to be solid and strong at the beginning of the story.
However, it doesn’t take long for outside forces to get in the way of Layken and Will’s love…Yet, again.
Their love is tested. Their faith in each other is tested. And if successful, they can come out of this stronger than they ever were.
There is also a lot more of Gavin and Eddie as we see their relationship progress, as well. And they continue to be two of my favorite characters in the series, adding an element of humor and a loyal friendship that both Will and Layken are sorely in need of throughout the story.
Caulder and Kel are now eleven and are getting older and more mature. I loved that we get a peak at some of their shenanigans at school and, more importantly, a peak at their characters. And they are growing into two very outstanding young men. It left me with a feeling of peace, knowing that these boys would come out okay, even with all that they’ve been through.
Caulder’s and Kel’s new friend–and coincidentally, neighbor–Kiersten, is SUCH a delight! I wouldn’t have thought that Ms. Hoover could’ve added another character that I would have become so attached to right off the bat, but there it is! Kiersten’s mother, Sherry, also serves to bring a “mother” figure into the story when it appears she’s needed the most.
There are some very exciting moments to this story and I was totally unable to put this book down from the MOMENT I picked it up.
All I can say is, WHEN is Ms. Hoover coming out with something new? This book was phenomenal!
