From Charlaine Harris, the bestselling author who created Sookie Stackhouse and her world of Bon Temps, Louisiana, comes a darker locale - populated by more strangers than friends. But then, that’s how the locals prefer it...
Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town.
There’s a pawnshop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). There’s a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). And there’s new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he’s found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his own).
Stop at the one traffic light in town, and everything looks normal. Stay awhile, and learn the truth...
Okay, let me just start by saying that I actually made it through most of the Sookie Stackhouse series and loved it.. So, in general, I’m a huge fan of Charlaine Harris’ writing. She’s obviously very talented, seeing as how she has several books published and is a successful author.
But–this book was difficult for me. I read this for one of my book clubs, and I actually flew through it pretty quickly. The main issue that I had, was that I felt like by the end of the book, I wasn’t really in the loop. There was just much that was still so ambiguous about everything.
And the main mystery got solved around the 85% mark–but, I just felt like it was slightly anticlimactic.
Also, I feel like some of the characters that I was supposed to love–were just annoying.
With all that said–I actually started the second book in the series, right after I finished this one. So, job well done, Charlaine! Even though I was underwhelmed, I was hooked!
