In a novel-in-verse that brims with grief and love, National Book Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Acevedo writes about the devastation of loss, the difficulty of forgiveness, and the bittersweet bonds that shape our lives.
Camino Rios lives for the summers when her father visits her in the Dominican Republic. But this time, on the day when his plane is supposed to land, Camino arrives at the airport to see crowds of crying people…
In New York City, Yahaira Rios is called to the principal’s office, where her mother is waiting to tell her that her father, her hero, has died in a plane crash.
Separated by distance—and Papi’s secrets—the two girls are forced to face a new reality in which their father is dead and their lives are forever altered.
And then, when it seems like they’ve lost everything of their father, they learn of each other.
Oh. My. Goodness. This book. I’ve never before read a book done in this style–a novel-in-verse. It reads more like poetry than a novel.
This was a bittersweet story of sisters that had no idea the other existed. One horrible even happens and their lives are forever changed.
This is a story of how that event left it’s mark on each girl and how they find each other. It’s about healing and old wounds. And how family can look different for everyone.
I breezed through this book. It was such an easy, captivating read that was effortless to love.
Elizabeth Acevedo has a way with words and I can’t read enough of them.

Acevedo always writes incredible and emotional books. But that ending was so wonderful and unexpected.

You said it exactly! The ending was just… it was perfect.
I think The Poet X is still my favorite Acevedo book. With the Fire on High was really good too, and I haven’t had a chance to read Clap When You Land. I’m currently on hold for the audio at my library! Fingers crossed I get to listen to it soon. 🙂

I’ve heard several people in my book club state how AMAZING it is on audio! I hope you love it!
I’ve heard such great things about this author! I really need to pick one of her books up!
Definitely! Do it! 😉
It sounds incredible but so very sad. I don’t think I can cope with it right now. Lovely review. I will add it to my TBR to read after COVID 😉
